Battery
A battery that's struggling usually tells you before it quits completely — slow cranking on startup, dimming headlights at idle, a dashboard warning light, or a battery more than 3–4 years old are all worth paying attention to. See our full guide on changing a car battery →
Brakes
Squealing or grinding when you brake, a soft or spongy pedal, or the car pulling to one side when you stop are all common signs your brake pads or rotors need a look. Grinding especially is worth getting checked soon — waiting too long on brakes usually turns a smaller job into a bigger one.
Alternator & Electrical
If your battery keeps dying even after a jump, your headlights flicker or dim while driving, or you notice a burning-rubber smell, it's not always the battery itself — the alternator, which keeps your battery charged while the engine runs, could be part of the picture too. A dashboard battery light while driving is one of the signs worth having both checked.
Cooling System
A temperature gauge creeping toward hot, steam from under the hood, or a sweet smell while driving are signs your cooling system needs attention. Ignored cooling issues can turn into engine damage fast, so this isn't one to put off.
Wipers & Visibility
Streaking, skipping, or squeaking wipers, or a blade that's cracked or peeling, all mean it's time for new ones — worth checking each season, not just when it's raining.
